Friday night I got a call from Husband's mom. A couple in their neighborhood had 5 tickets to the BYU game and Husband's dad really wanted to go. His mom, however, was not thrilled at the idea of driving down there and sitting in the cold, so she was asking if we could take him and find a few other people to come with us. After some hurried phone calls, we secured a babysitter and my dad and our brother-in-law Jon agreed to be part of the entourage. The forecast was for it to be about 26 degrees during most of the game. We were a little worried about how Husband's dad would handle that. He had a stroke when Husband was almost 16. It left him paralyzed on one side. He can walk, but it's slow and stairs are obviously a challenge. Also, getting cold is pretty painful for him. We made it to the stadium with plenty of time to spare. We enjoyed the perk of parking in the handicapped lot, which is about as close to the stadium as you can get. Sweet! We were supposed to meet the people with the tickets on the North-East side of the stadium, and we parked on the west side. Husband's dad didn't want to walk all the way around. We tried to tell them he couldn't get in without a ticket, but he just waved us off. We figured once the staff turned him away, we'd go around to the correct entrance. Nope. He just walked right past the staff! Not sure why they let him, maybe because he just didn't stop going or because he walks with a heavy limp and a cane, but he just went on through. Okey dokey! So we met up with the rest of our group and the tickets. In the meantime, Husband's dad had saved himself a lot of stairs and just walked underneath the bleachers to where we were supposed to meet. So he was just waiting for us. Our seats were pretty good, just a little high up. It took some time and a scary moment or two when people's purses or jackets hanging in the aisle got caught on his foot, but he made it up the stairs to our seats. We'd brought a blanket to sit on since those metal bleachers are cold. I wish we'd thought to bring blankets to wrap up in! We were all wearing multiple layers, but the slight breeze was making that 26 degrees feel much colder. Husband's dad was having the time of his life. He is a die-hard BYU fan and was beyond thrilled to be at the game. Especially since this one was on a channel none of us get. By the half, BYU was winning and we were frozen! So off to concessions to get hot chocolate and some hot dogs. That sure helped warm us up. My feet were pretty frozen at this point, though. We were beyond the point where they hurt and somewhere around numb. The problem on this particular occasion with having such wide feet is that I couldn't double up on the socks. My feet already struggle to fit inside shoes with just one pair. I was walking kinda funny at half time. We ended up moving to almost the front row because so many people left at halftime and didn't come back. We also ran into Husband's sister's husband and our nephew. They had better tickets that included dinner and going back to a heated tent during halftime. We were a little jealous! We stayed for all of the 2nd half, and I had to laugh at the fans reactions anytime timeout was called or the refs reviewed a play. Everyone was booing and yelling about how cold we all were, and for crying out loud just keep the clock running so we can finish the game and go home! The poor Vegas players looked pretty darn cold. I'm betting that coming from 70 degrees to 26 degrees was a shock to the system. And actually, one of our party checked her phone at some point (brave, since that required removing gloves) and the weather app was saying 18, but with wind chill it felt like 8. Brrrr! After the game, we hobbled on our frozen feet to the car and cranked the heat all the way home. It was cold, but SO fun!
